Day#13 Family History Journey

Today I got up early and was able using the Temple Reservation feature to make temple appointments for the next 5 weeks.

It is my Grandpa Baldwin’s 113th birthday today. I posted on FB about it being his birthday and asked people to share memories.

My aunt Betty called and thanked me for the letter I posted from Family Search about George D. Watt. She had already called my parents about it and was going to call Uncle Bill. I need to email the letter to him as he doesn’t use FB.

I also want to visit Gail and Betty and some of my other aunts and uncles on Saturday next week when I am home. Maybe, i can get their memories recorded while I am there.

So even though I didn’t spend a full hour this morning..I did end up doing some FH through the day.

Part of my own story happened tonight as the Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan became a TV series. Gil and I watched the first 2 episodes tonight. I started reading that series before I went on my mission and the last book came out about 5 years ago. It is also something I share with my Dad, Tim and Kevin.

Day#12 My Family History Journey

To be honest, I haven’t done much serious family history today. I have done what President Nelson has admonished us to do..”whenever you do something good for another person, you are helping to gather Israel.” Today, I served my in-laws by taking my mother-in-law to the doctor and making multiple phone calls for my father-in-law. I also made beef stew that I will share with family. I visited Holly my ministering companion and ministered to Leslie, Amanda, Jenny and Tina.

Tonight I watched episode 7 and 8 of The Chosen with Gil. If you have not seen The Chosen please look for it on YouTube or download the app..it is free. There is a Christmas Special coming up on Dec. 1. We are going with our friends, the Wrights. It is being shown in movie theaters. You can find out showtimes and locations at Fathom Events. Here is a link to the trailer. https://youtu.be/a9s7OUspzes

Two questions

I was reading Y magazine Fall 2021 today while eating breakfast. I read a story about a young man named Paris Thomas who is attending BYU Law School this fall on a scholarship. His story is truly remarkable and I hope someday, I can have that kind of impact on someone’s life that others had on his life. As he contemplated going to law school, he asked himself, “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?”

The other question came from a short article on Diljeet Taylor, the BYU Women’s Cross Country Coach. She asks herself everyday: “Who did I empower today?”

I plan to start asking myself these questions daily. I think it will help me to increase my influence and my courage.

Day #11 Family History Journey

Today I went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple, the 7 am endowment session, and did the ordinance for Hazel Amy Ennest, the wife of a distant cousin. I love being in the temple and feeling the peace there. In the past, there are parts of the session that I routinely slept through but I have been working on staying awake and alert each time I go. I do gain greater understanding and knowledge as I pay more attention and also if I have prayed before I go to the temple.

Today, I had some thoughts about how to better organize other pages on my blog. I think that I will have Mondays be my Foundation Day. Discussion about those habits and practices that help me continue to build and strengthen my foundation. I am referring to habits like daily sincere prayer, scripture/Gospel study, journaling, and meditation. Other practices that help me increase and strengthen my testimony are striving to keep my covenants, service to others, attending church and temple often and doing Family History.

Day #10 My Family History Journey

I opened up Family Search this morning and this story showed up on my feed. It is a story about my great-granduncle, William Marks Hatch. He participated in both World War I and II. I am so grateful for the rich heritage I have of military service.

Well, I need to contact my Ward Family History Consultant and ask some questions before I link Ann Lewis as Mrs. Lewis to David Lewis.

I did another Connections post. I shared some pictures from our Yellowstone trip in 2004? 2003?

I also used Ordinance Ready and printed out name I can take and do an endowment tomorrow morning. Name is Hazel Amy Ennest born September 1892 in Michigan. She is on my Grandma Baldwin’s line.

Day#9 My Family History Journey

I spent some time tonight looking at Memories on Family Search about my great, great grandfather George Darling Watt.

George Darling Watt
Story about George D. Watt

I am amazed at all the information about his life on Family Search. I found out from Memories on Family Search that he has some stories written about his life as a child on the streets of England. The stories are called “Little Georgie” and are in the Juvenile Instructor. I want to find the stories and give them to my Dad, his great grandson.

I was able to go walking with my mother-in-law, Brenda Parkin, today. She is preparing to participate in the Utah Human Race https://secure.utahfoodbank.org/site/TR/Events/General?pg=entry&fr_id=1190&gclid=CjwKCAiAp8iMBhAqEiwAJb94z6hn-3HuvwCWdEG5B1OUiHZRTENEJHzSVdcKUI_ZXlTvYRZSe3a-bBoC9woQAvD_BwE. The race takes place on Thanksgiving morning. It is a great way to support the Utah Food Bank. Our family has participated for many years.

Day #8 My Family History Journey

I had to work today and then Gil and Brenda came over for dinner so I am doing a short post. I had planned to interview both of them and record the interviews but Gil, Sr., had been fishing with Gil Jr., at Herriman Pond all day and both were tired.

Gil told a story at dinner of dating a red headed girl who was already engaged and then later meeting her husband on a street in Philadelphia.

Gil St and Jr had a great day fishing and each caught 2 fish. We will eat them tomorrow. They enjoyed great weather especially for this time of year.

I put together a draft of a letter I hope to mail iut to my aunts and uncles this week. The letter asks them to write about Mom and Dad and then we will put it in Mom and Dad’s Storyworth book.

Short post today. I am off tomorrow and have a lot to do.

Day #7 Family History Journey

Today, I had clinical for BYU N342 at University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital and Craig Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital in Salt Lake City. I started the day at 3:30 am and clinical ends around 4:15 pm. I love working with my nursing students. They are truly remarkable in their consistent efforts to learn the Healer’s Art.

I spoke with family member while driving home today and it was very good conversation. At the end of the conversation I felt prompted to talk about receiving help from the other side of the veil. My comment was well received and acknowledged as valid by my family member. She agreed to read an article I told her I would send on that topic.

As I drove home tonight from Gil’s parents home, I listened to one of my favorite talks on the power of Family History by Elder Dale G. Renlund. He gave this talk in April 2018 General Conference. It was entitled: Family History and Temple Work: Sealing and Healing. I encourage you to watch/listen to this talk and then read it over and over again. He shares the following list of blessings that come from doing Family History:

  • Increased understanding of the Savior and His atoning sacrifice;
  • Increased influence of the Holy Ghost7 to feel strength and direction for our own lives;
  • Increased faith, so that conversion to the Savior becomes deep and abiding;
  • Increased ability and motivation to learn and repent8 because of an understanding of who we are, where we come from, and a clearer vision of where we are going;
  • Increased refining, sanctifying, and moderating influences in our hearts;
  • Increased joy through an increased ability to feel the love of the Lord;
  • Increased family blessings, no matter our current, past, or future family situation or how imperfect our family tree may be;
  • Increased love and appreciation for ancestors and living relatives, so we no longer feel alone;
  • Increased power to discern that which needs healing and thus, with the Lord’s help, serve others;
  • Increased protection from temptations and the intensifying influence of the adversary; and
  • Increased assistance to mend troubled, broken, or anxious hearts and make the wounded whole.

Which of these blessings have you been praying for in your life?

The talk that got me truly started on my Family History Journey happened in April 2015 at BYU Women’s Conference. It was the keynote address of the conference given by Sis. Wendy Watson Nelson, the wife of President Nelson. Listening to her speak that day in the Marriott Center, it was like hearing about Family History and covenants in a completely different language that spoke directly to my heart, mind and spirit. At that time of my life, I really tried to do the 21-day challenge but I think I ended up doing it for a couple of weeks, not 21 days. However, that desire to do Family History, has not left and I have tried multiple times to consistently do Family History on a daily basis.

As I wrote on Day #1 of my journey, I very committed to succeed this time. I feel like I need and the Lord needs me to do this because there are things my Heavenly Father wants me to do that will require my faith and sincere effort in keeping my covenant to gather Israel and consecrate my time, talents and everything I am to Him.

Pres. Nelson has said, “Anytime we do anything that helps anyone … make and keep their covenants with God, we are helping to gather Israel.”4 Well, I am going to propose to a couple of my family members that they do a version of Sis. Nelson’s 21-day Family History experiment because they need several of the blessings Elder Renlund shared in his talk.

DAy #6 Family History Journey

This will be short. I got up at 4;30 am and worked on finding out more about David Lewis and Mrs. Lewis on my Grandma Watt’s line. I think I might have found a couple who might be David and Mrs. Lewis. I am going to keep praying about it and researching it for a few more days.

Day #5 Family History Journey

Family Search is an amazing example of so much innovation and technological advancement. There is a new way to help with Family History by improving the accuracy of Family Tree. It gives you 10 places to review and help confirm the accuracy of the listed place. I have learned a lot about geography and how to do research on finding places. Just click on the link above and it will take you to the page if you have a Family Search account. Signing up for Family Search is very easy and you don’t have to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

They are trying out some new features on Family Search. I was able to post 3 pictures about a Parkin Family Campout in August 2002 and write a little bit about the pictures. I tried to use the feature to tag people in the photos but that didn’t seem to work as well, could be user error. Here is a link that allows people to see the post on Family Search. https://www.familysearch.org/eurona/feed/?invite=Y2lzLnVzZXIuTU1NTS1CQlFK&locale=en

Here is another fun article on Family Search about Cousins.

The home page of Family Search will show ancestors who are missing information, sources in a section called Recommended Tasks. I am trying to find out about Mrs. Lewis, my 5th great-grandmother on my Grandma Watt’s side. The line stops with her and her husband, David Lewis. I am going to need some angelic help on this one, I think.
